What does it take to turn a passion for learning into opportunities that span countries, roles, and new challenges? Marcus Tran, a participant in the MaivenPoint Work-Study Programme and now a Technical General Manager at AvePoint Singapore, reflects on his journey — from building a strong technical foundation in Vietnam to growing his career and leadership capabilities in Singapore. His story offers a first-hand perspective on how continuous learning can open doors to new opportunities and career growth.

Looking back, I have had opportunities to grow across my academic and professional journey. A defining moment came when MaivenPoint enabled me to secure a local career opportunity in Vietnam and expand it to Singapore. That experience opened the door to new challenges, new perspectives, and countless opportunities to grow

One lesson that has guided me throughout: The moment you think you have learned enough is the moment you stop growing.

Growing Through Technical Excellence

My journey began in Vietnam, where I studied in a Mathematics-specialized high school and earned national-level awards. These achievements led to direct admission to the honors programme in Information Technology at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST).

After graduating, I joined AvePoint Vietnam as a software developer. I focused on solving technical challenges and contributing to projects that delivered value for customers. Thanks to my strong technical foundation and the support of talented colleagues, I grew quickly and took on increasingly complex responsibilities.

Expanding Beyond Technical Skills

I believe learning should extend beyond technical skills.

One example was learning Chinese. As AvePoint is a global company, I wanted to communicate more effectively with colleagues from different backgrounds. What began as a personal challenge became a practical skill that helped me collaborate better and build stronger relationships across teams.

I also became increasingly interested in working more closely with customers. Through projects involving Singaporean clients, I gained exposure to their challenges and ambitions.

Taking the Leap to Singapore

My experiences inspired me to pursue a long-standing goal: building my career in Singapore. After working closely with Singaporean customers, I realized I wanted to experience the environment first-hand and contribute more directly to their success.

When MaivenPoint introduced the Work-Study Programme, it became the opportunity I had been waiting for. The programme allowed me to continue working while pursuing my studies in Singapore, making the transition both challenging and rewarding.

The move to Singapore broadened my perspective. Through the Work-Study Programme, I took part in practical assignments and applied what I learned in real situations. These experiences strengthened my communication and problem-solving skills, enabling me to work more confidently with customers. Whether at work or in the classroom, I pushed myself to learn from every experience and every person around me.

Over time, these experiences led to my current role as a technical general manager at AvePoint Singapore, a position that carries significant responsibility and recognition from customers, my team, and senior leadership alike. In this role, I lead major technical initiatives and oversee projects, making the journey both challenging and deeply rewarding.

While I value the milestones I have achieved, the most meaningful part of my journey has been the people I have worked with. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to learn from mentors, teammates, and friends who generously shared their knowledge and support. Their influence taught me the importance of doing the same for others.

Paying It Forward Through Support and Growth

Today, one of the most rewarding aspects of my role is helping colleagues overcome challenges, sharing knowledge, and supporting the growth of those around me. Seeing others succeed is as fulfilling as achieving personal success.

My journey from Vietnam to Singapore has shown me that success is not defined by academic achievements, job titles, or technical expertise alone. It comes from maintaining curiosity, embracing new challenges, and never losing the desire to learn.

No matter where the future leads, that is a lesson I will carry forward.
